Tribute Day: Perry Maxwell (1879-1952) - Hole #14

  • The Architects Golf Club 700 Stryker Rd Phillipsburg, NJ, 08865 United States (map)

Pay tribute to Perry Maxwell, inspiration for Hole #14, with a round of golf on Friday, May 22nd.

Hole No. 14: In the style of Perry Maxwell

Hole No. 14: In the style of Perry Maxwell

Perry Maxwell (1879-1952), created such notable courses as Southern Hills in Tulsa, OK, Prairie Dunes in Kansas, and with fellow "Architect," Alister MacKenzie, Crystal Downs in Michigan. Maxwell's unique trademarks include clam shell bunkers and wild greens whose contours were appropriately dubbed, "Maxwell Rolls."

Our 14th hole is the first of 3 challenging par 4's in a row. It features a rolling fairway guarded by a single bunker on the right. The green is situated to allow a ball to be rolling onto it from the left. True to Maxwell's style, the putting surface slopes in several directions, so two-putts are no certainty.

Perry Maxwell's work will be on display with the PGA Tour visiting Colonial Country Club (Fort Worth, TX) from May 18th - May 24th for the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. Colonial Country Club was established in 1936, designed by Maxwell in collaboration with John Bredemus
