Happy Birthday, Perry Maxwell! ⛳ 🎂️
Oklahoma banker turned legendary golf course architect, Perry Maxwell (1879-1952), brought the spirit of the Midwest to life on the golf course. Starting with Dornick Hills Golf & Country Club on his family farm, Maxwell went on to design 70 courses and remodel 50 others, including gems like Southern Hills in Tulsa, Old Town in North Carolina, and Prairie Dunes in Kansas. Partnering with Alister MacKenzie in the late 1920s, the duo created masterpieces like Crystal Downs and the University of Michigan course. Even after losing a leg in 1945, Maxwell’s passion never wavered—he refined Augusta National and continued designing alongside his son, Press Maxwell.
Our par-4 14th hole at The Architects Golf Club showcases Maxwell’s signature traits: long par-4s, distinctive “clamshell” bunkers, and the famously contoured “Maxwell Rolls” greens. The fairway’s left side is subtly canted to mirror the challenge of rolling a ball onto the green in Maxwell’s era, blending classic strategy with modern play.
